Spanish Language Arts (SLA) Guidelines
The following guidelines for Spanish Language Arts, based on a wide body of research, are meant to assist content developers in the development of high-quality materials in Spanish. The use of these guidelines will provide powerful supports to bilingual and multilingual students.
This resource highlights the foundational characteristics needed in Spanish to develop both content knowledge and linguistic and cultural abilities. Based on these guidelines, materials should:
- Be rigorous and demonstrate respect for the intellectual and creative abilities of students.
- Integrate both foundational and advanced levels of Spanish literacy.
- Utilize original and authentic Spanish texts that reflect the content being studied and that serve as models of the structures and different genres of the Spanish language.
- Represent the varieties of Spanish found in the Spanish-speaking world.
