Guideline 12: Formative assessments

Assessments are primarily formative, helping students and teachers to measure progress in language use over time in alignment with daily language objectives and unit language goals.

Assessments provide multiple opportunities to show and celebrate what students know and can do with language in the moment and across the unit in alignment with content and language objectives and unit-level language goals.

Guideline 13: Assess students’ language skills

Materials show teachers how to formatively assess students’ spoken and written language to determine when to provide and take away scaffolds, instead of relying on annual language proficiency scores or grades alone.
