Introduction

Materials Must: The non-negotiables every curriculum must have

We know district and education leaders recognize the value of high-quality instructional materials, but many struggle to define or identify them, according to a recent Gallup poll. Additionally, four out of five teachers say their current materials don’t adequately support multilingual learners.

As leaders face the complex process of adopting materials that truly support teachers in meeting the needs of all students, including multilingual learners, the English Learners Success Forum is offering an easy-to-use, research-based framework that outlines the Materials Must: three non-negotiable features all instructional materials need to include to be responsive to the needs of multilingual learners as well as all students.

As states enter their respective adoption cycles for both math and literacy, we urge leaders to consider the Materials Must features for both content areas – Math Must-Haves and Literacy Must-Haves.
