ELA Text and Task Language Analysis: Identifying and Planning for Language Demands
Guidance to analyze language demands to support instructional material design
Explicit attention should be given to the language demands that are inherent to learning content, as language and content learning are inextricably connected. This contextualized focus on both language and content is an important element of high-quality instructional materials design for all students, but it’s an essential feature for multilingual learners (MLLs), as MLLs are simultaneously balancing both the content and language load of every lesson.
This resource provides content developers with the steps and tools to analyze the language demands of texts and tasks in order to effectively design instructional materials that promote both disciplinary language and content development in rich and meaningful contexts.
