Designated English Language Development (ELD) Guidelines


The Guidelines for Improving Designated English Language Development Materials articulate key research-informed design features and fundamental aspects of language development that are the basis for improving designated ELD materials.
Designated ELD is the protected time during the school day in which students receive explicit and systematic instruction to support English language development. This protected time for designated ELD offers direct instruction that focuses on how English works, and supports the development of effective communication for social and academic purposes in a variety of academic contexts and for a variety of purposes.
Both curriculum developers and educators (working in collaboration at the state, district, or school level) may benefit from these. Guidelines to inform their adoption or adaptation of existing curriculum materials as well as the development of new materials. We encourage stakeholders to use this resource to improve the teaching and learning happening in designated ELD classrooms.
